Equal employment opportunity policy statement

Equal employment opportunity for individuals with disabilities and protected veterans

It is the policy of Unum not to discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because he or she is an individual with a disability or a protected veteran (i.e., a disabled veteran, recently separated veteran, Armed Forces service medal veteran, or other veteran who served during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized). It is also the policy of Unum to take affirmative action to employ and to advance in employment all persons regardless of their status as individuals with disabilities or as protected veterans, and to base all employment decisions only on valid job requirements. In accordance with this policy, we will recruit, hire, train and promote persons in all job titles, and will ensure that all other personnel actions, including but not limited to transfers, demotions, layoffs, recalls , terminations, rates of pay or other forms of compensation, and selection for training, including apprenticeship, are administered without regard to disability or protected veteran status.

Employees and applicants of Unum will not be subject to harassment, intimidation, threats, coercion or discrimination because they have engaged or may engage in any of the following activities: (1) Filing a complaint; (2) Assisting or participating in an investigation, compliance evaluation, hearing or any other activity related to the administration of the affirmative action and/or nondiscrimination provisions of Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Section 503) and the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, as amended (VEVRAA) or any other Federal, state, or local law requiring equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities or protected veterans; (3) Opposing any act or practice made unlawful by Section 503 or VEVRAA or their implementing regulations, or any other Federal, state or local law requiring equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities or protected veterans; (4) Exercising any other right protected by Section 503 or VEVRAA or their implementing regulations.

As Chief Executive Officer of Unum, I am committed to the principles of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity. In order to ensure dissemination and implementation of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action throughout all levels of the company, I have selected the AVP, Workforce Metric, Reporting & Analysis as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Officer for Unum. One of the EEO Officer's duties will be to establish and maintain an internal audit and reporting system to allow for effective measurement of Unum's programs.

In furtherance of Unum's policy regarding Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity, Unum has developed a written Affirmative Action Program which sets forth the policies, practices and procedures that Unum is committed to in order to ensure that its policy of nondiscrimination and affirmative action for qualified individuals with disabilities and qualified protected veterans is accomplished. This Affirmative Action Program is available for inspection by any employee or applicant for employment upon request, during normal business hours, in the Administration Department Interested persons should contact the EEO Officer at 207-575-9304 for assistance.
